Wallkill Fire Department Dedicates Bronze Fallen Firefighter Statue

The Wallkill Hook, Ladder and Hose Company has unveiled a powerful new tribute to its fallen heroes: a life-sized bronze kneeling firefighter statue, created by Bronze-Depot.com, Inc. This handcrafted statue stands outside the fire department’s historic old building as a permanent reminder of courage, sacrifice, and service.

A Memorial Years in the Making

Florida-based sculptor Richard DeVuono, president of Bronze Depot, has been creating bronze statues and memorials for over 25 years. When the Wallkill department began searching for a way to honor its firefighters, they discovered Bronze Depot online.

“I believe they found me on the internet,” DeVuono said. “They did a search for fallen firefighter memorials, and that’s how they found me.”

Working closely with his wife, Maria DeVuono, and local fire service leaders—including Delbe Spath, president of Wallkill Fire Company, and Joseph T. Smith, chair of the Wallkill Firefighters Benevolent Association—DeVuono customized the statue specifically for the department. Each firefighter helmet included in the design carries the unique logo and name of the department, making every memorial personal and distinct.

Funded by Community and Tradition

The project was coordinated by the Firefighters Benevolent Association. DeVuono often works with departments that already have funding, but he also helps those still raising money through a special free fundraising kit.

“We put a program together where they can tell us they want to get into it,” DeVuono explained. “We provide them with booklets, sample photos, and even a script to help volunteers explain the project. These people aren’t salespeople—they’re firefighters and community members. We give them the tools to succeed.”

A Lasting Tribute

The statue took about six to seven weeks to make, after an intensive sculpting process that began with clay models, which were then molded, welded, and cast into bronze. The result is a striking, museum-quality tribute that resonates with visitors and community members alike.

“I think it’s a great tribute to the folks that led us in the fire service from Wallkill, those that came before us and those that’ll pass after us,” said Eric Orr of the Wallkill Firefighters Association. “It’ll be a tribute to live for generations.”

The statue will soon be joined by two plaques, further honoring the names and legacy of the fallen.
