Dothan High School Senior Class Honors Local Firefighters with a Bronze Legacy Gift

A Community Comes Together to Recognize Those Who Serve

Most senior class gifts are forgotten after a few years. The Dothan High School Senior Class decided to do something different.

Rather than selecting a traditional gift for the school, the students chose to honor the men and women of the Dothan Fire Department with a custom bronze firefighter statue. What began as an idea quickly grew into a community project that brought together students, educators, firefighters, and local leaders in a shared effort to recognize the people who answer the call whenever their community needs them.

The Dothan High School Senior Class selected a custom bronze firefighter statue as its legacy gift to the Dothan Fire Department. The donation was intended to serve as a permanent expression of gratitude for the firefighters whose dedication, service, and sacrifice help keep the Dothan community safe.

The Inspiration Behind the Project

The idea for the project centered around the concept of a legacy gift. The students wanted to leave something meaningful behind, not only for themselves but for the entire community.

Firefighters are often recognized during emergencies, but their daily commitment, training, and sacrifice frequently take place outside the public eye. The graduating seniors wanted to create something permanent that would remind future generations of the important role firefighters play in keeping their community safe.

The result was a decision to commission a bronze firefighter statue that would be presented to the Dothan Fire Department as the Senior Class Legacy Gift.

Creating the Bronze Firefighter Statue

The statue depicts a firefighter kneeling in full turnout gear while holding an axe and breathing apparatus. Every detail was carefully sculpted to reflect the equipment and appearance of today’s firefighters. Produced using the traditional lost-wax bronze casting process, the sculpture captures the strength, professionalism, and dedication associated with the fire service. Although smaller than many public firefighter memorials, the statue carries the same message of service, sacrifice, and commitment that larger memorial projects represent.

From the earliest design stages through the final bronze casting, the goal remained the same: create a piece that would honor firefighters in a respectful and meaningful way.

Presentation to the Dothan Fire Department

The completed statue was formally presented to members of the Dothan Fire Department during a special dedication ceremony.

Students, school officials, firefighters, and community leaders gathered to celebrate the project and recognize the partnership that made it possible. The event highlighted not only the generosity of the senior class but also the strong relationship between the Dothan community and its fire department.

Dothan City Schools Superintendent Dennis R. Coe praised the project as another example of positive community engagement and student leadership. Dothan Fire Department Chief Larry Williams expressed his appreciation for the gift and the thoughtfulness behind the project.

The dedication served as a reminder that the impact of the fire service extends far beyond emergency response. It also demonstrated how young people can make a meaningful contribution to their community.

What the Project Meant to Firefighters

During the presentation, Deputy Chief Chris Etheredge of the Dothan Fire Department spoke about the significance of the project and the impact it had on the department. Etheredge noted that it was difficult to put into words what an honor it was to have young people reach out and recognize public service in such a meaningful way. He said the project reflected the values being taught to the students and demonstrated their appreciation for the firefighters and public safety personnel who serve their community every day.

For members of the Dothan Fire Department, the bronze statue represented more than a gift. It served as a reminder that the work performed by firefighters is noticed and appreciated by the people they protect. The project created a connection between the students and the department while expressing gratitude for the sacrifices made by first responders.

A Lasting Legacy. Today, the bronze firefighter statue stands as a symbol of gratitude, service, and community pride.

For the Dothan Fire Department, it serves as a reminder that their efforts are recognized and appreciated. For the students who helped make the project possible, it represents a legacy that will continue long after graduation. The Dothan High School Senior Class created more than a gift. They created a lasting tribute to the firefighters who dedicate their lives to protecting others.
